My Background

I convert electric trikes out of my home garage in Ripon, Wisconsin. Over the past several years I've done somewhere between 45 and 50 conversions, pairing 1000-watt motor kits with various battery configurations. That means I've had extensive opportunity to test what works and what doesn't — and plenty of opportunity to get burned by batteries that looked good on paper.


The Road to BTR

Before landing on BtrPower, I went through the typical progression that most etrike builders go through.

I started with Hailong 20AH batteries. For their time they were reasonably decent, but I was only getting just over 20 miles per charge on throttle-only riding — not impressive by any standard, and not enough range for real-world use.

Then I did what a lot of people do: I went looking for deals on AliExpress and other discount sources. That turned out to be an expensive lesson. Every cheap battery I tried was a disappointment — poor range, questionable build quality, and zero confidence in safety. I tried multiple sources and got burned every time.

Real-World Range: They Undersell It

I've taken multiple day trips across several rides to verify this number. 45 miles throttle-only is consistent and repeatable. Add pedaling and I'd estimate 60+ miles, though I haven't formally tested that yet — it takes a very long time to run this battery down.

By comparison, the Hailong batteries I started with topped out at just over 20 miles. BtrPower more than doubles that.


Why LiFePO4 Changes Everything

Most people shopping for ebike batteries are comparing standard lithium-ion options without realizing there's a meaningful chemistry difference available to them. LiFePO4 — Lithium Iron Phosphate — charges and discharges differently, and that difference explains why this battery performs the way it does.

LiFePO4 is the same chemistry used in serious solar energy storage installations, and there's a good reason for that. It's more stable, delivers more consistent power through the full discharge cycle, and is dramatically safer than standard lithium-ion.

The 60A peak discharge current for 5 seconds is worth noting for hill climbing — the battery handles sudden power demand without dropping voltage noticeably.


Customer Service Worth Mentioning

No product review is complete without addressing what happens when something goes wrong.

I did have a couple of issues with the 25AH version of this battery — not the 20AH I primarily use. In both cases, BtrPower's response was exemplary. On the first battery, they replaced it outright. On the second, I had purchased it in December but didn't build and test that particular trike until spring — putting me outside their 90-day replacement window. They gave me 50% off the replacement anyway.

That's a company standing behind their product even when they technically didn't have to. For a purchase in this price range from a brand some buyers may not recognize, that kind of customer service is worth as much as the product itself.


The Price Keeps Getting Better

When I started buying these batteries they were running around $250. The current price has dropped to $189–209 depending on timing and availability. For a LiFePO4 battery of this quality and real-world range performance, that's excellent value. Comparable batteries from well-known brands often run significantly more.


Who This Battery Is For

This battery is the right choice for anyone doing etrike or ebike conversions with 250–1000 watt motor kits, anyone who has been burned by cheap imported batteries and wants something that actually delivers, anyone concerned about lithium battery fire safety, and anyone who needs real-world range rather than optimistic manufacturer claims. The Battery fits comfortably in a medium sized bike bag and tucks easily between the basket and seat pole.


Bottom Line

Three years. Nearly 50 conversions. Consistent 45-mile throttle-only range on a 1000-watt kit. Incombustible chemistry. A company that stands behind their product. A price that keeps coming down.

The BtrPower 48V 20AH LiFePO4 battery is the only battery I recommend for etrike conversions, and it's the only one I use.
